God is Sovereign

Written by Myles MacMillan.

“Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race. Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts. May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue - those who say, “By our tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us - who is lord over us?” “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord. “I will protect them from those who malign them.” And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.” (NIV) Psalm 12

Unfaithfulness, deception, arrogance, malice, wickedness. It seems as though Psalm 12 could have been written yesterday because it is so relevant and applicable in our present age. Sometimes we feel that things are out of control and everything is headed in a downward spiral. While in some ways, this is probably true, we also need to take note of this beautiful reminder in Psalm 12. Since this was written so long ago, we see that wickedness and opposition to God’s commands are nothing new. Is there any comfort for the Christian living in a world like this? Yes indeed, and we can find that comfort in our God.

In Psalm 12:5, God makes a beautiful promise to the poor and needy that expresses His authority and sovereignty. He says, “I will protect them from those who malign them…” and again in Psalm 12:7, we see that the Lord will “…keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.” These reminders should give us comfort as we understand who is in control. Even though things around us may seem completely chaotic, our all-powerful God is at work and has “the whole world in His hands”. As Christians, we need to realize that we are not immune to difficulties in this life. The fact is that sometimes in this life, we will endure hardship from those who practice evil. The promise and hope we have are in knowing that in this life there may be trouble but we have an eternal home to look forward to with our God where there will be no more evil, pain or suffering and where we will be in the presence of our God forever. Perhaps the bible says it best in Romans 8:18 “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us”.

As Christians, we may lose heart when we see the world around us steeped in sin and we may wonder if God is really in control. It’s passages like this that reaffirm the truth for us and help us to see that God has a plan and it will unfold in the time and way that is in accordance with His will. Our job is to have faith that His plan is best and serve Him until we go to be with Him or until he returns to take us home.
