Give me Jesus

Written by Mantebeah Elizabeth Matilda Abena.

“He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else. He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but how few believe what he tells them! Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true. For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.” (NLT) John 3:31-36

As I soaked myself in music one Sunday after church, I listened to the songs that spoke of God’s love manifested in Jesus Christ. They all ministered with so much grace about the given Savior, his sacrifice, the cross, his faithfulness and mercies. And all I could think of is; “God, I want more of this Jesus”. In this same vein, the apostle Paul desired that he may know Christ and the power of his resurrection (Philippians 3:10). Therefore, I have for the past years made a commitment to walk with God’s Son, Jesus Christ. I believe and accept the testimony given of him in Scriptures by the Apostles and other early Christians as the life-changer for the better.

It never occurred to me that I will experience this Jesus for real in my life. I am blessed and humbled that Jesus has made my life beautiful and meaningful. He has made his cross real in my life. As we partook in the Lord’s Supper at church on Sunday, I soberly reflected upon the hymn “Jesus, keep me near the cross” as I hummed it prayerfully. Beloved, it will amaze you what we can find at the foot of Christ if we will take more of Him. The cross of Christ reflects sacrifice, love, peace, faithfulness, mercy, hope, faith, joy, tears, pain, darkness, thirst, insult, rejection, victory, loss, gain, among others.

I don’t know how the previous years have been for you, but for me, it has been all of that which I learnt at the cross. I have experienced so much sadness and excessive joy, boundless love and unjust treatment from friends and loved ones. I have lost friends and gained new favourites. I have been hurt and in pain from the unjust rejection from the people I trusted and shed many tears my eyes could not hold. Yet I am more than a conqueror in all these things because of Christ (Romans 8:37). I say this to God’s glory and so desire more of this Jesus. I want to learn more from his sacrifice on the cross that serves him the eternal crown.

What have you learnt from Jesus if you have a relationship with him? It’s also not too late to know of this Jesus if you do not have a personal relationship with him. As many people who come to him, Jesus promises that he will not cast away (John 6:38). It’s a new year and everyone is committing to something. Make a pact with God and you will never regret it. Ask God to help you know more of this Jesus in this new year. Shalom!
