Wisdom and obedience

Written by Myles MacMillan.

“Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds in the sky. Destruction and Death say, “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.” God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, for he views the ends of the earth” (NIV) (Job 28:20-24)

During a bible study some time ago, I was blessed to gain a deeper appreciation for God’s wisdom and I would like to share a few verses and thoughts related to it. My hope is that we can come to the understanding that the wisdom of God is exponentially greater than the wisdom of man and therefore what he wants for our lives is so much more important than our aspirations, interests and goals. Thankfully, we are blessed with the opportunity to learn some of the wisdom of God by reading the Bible and obeying His Word.

“Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” (1 Corinthians 1:22-25)

“God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.””(1 Corinthians 1: 28-31)

We see here that God’s plan for the redemption of all people is a result of His wisdom. Unfortunately, there are many people who won’t accept that plan of salvation. These people see God’s plan as foolishness but verse 24 says that the foolishness of God is even wiser that the wisdom of man. I’m sure we have all met people who think the Bible is foolishness and that they are wiser than the teachings within it. The truth however, as stated in verse 25, is that those who do accept the message will be blessed to experience the wisdom and the power of our God and those who reject it will miss out.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24)

Now that we understand that God is the only one with true wisdom and that through His wisdom he has made for us a way to be saved from our sins, what should our response be? The answer is that we must put to death in ourselves the idea that we know what’s best. If God really is so much wiser than us, we should only be seeking to understand how He wants us to live our lives. The best way for us to do this is by educating ourselves on His will for us which can only be found in His Word. Matthew 7:24 reveals Christ’s teaching on this exact topic. We must first hear the word and then put it into practice. I would like to close with this powerful verse from Isaiah. May God bless us and be gracious with us as we seek to learn His wisdom and put it into practice in our lives.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9)
