Thirst and Hunger

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

“And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” (NIV) Rev. 22:17

Physical thirst and hunger are strong desires and signals that show one is in distress and needs to be filled and fulfilled. These desires can be so intense that you want to do anything possible to quench them. Like Esau who had to sell his birthright for one meal because he felt extremely starved (Gen. 25:29-34). Indeed, food and water are key to the survival of every human. Even Jesus after fasting 40 days was extremely hungry and that placed him in a position to be tempted (Matt. 4:1-3).

A lot of people are hungry and suffering to death in the world because either they cannot afford food and clean water or they are not accessible to them. Have you considered what is happening to innermost being that is your soul? Sin is a killer and a destroyer of souls but humanity has no solution to this except God. Be thirsty and hungry for God and his word to survive these evil days.

Humanity is not taking interest in spiritual matters anymore because we are too hungry for physical success. Remember these words from our Lord Jesus Christ: “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” Matthew 5:3-6.

We must be hungry to establish a loving relationship with the Saviour Jesus. We must be hungry in character and conduct that please God our maker but not fellow humans. Even though we are exposed to the pleasures of this world, we must deny ourselves and thirst for God. Those who thirst and hunger for God will eventually be blessed by the King of Kings. The Bereans (Acts 17:11), 12 Disciples, and Apostle Paul all had great thirst and hunger for God and were successful in their ministry.

We must have the thirst and hunger for God because he created us and has great plans for us. If we don’t have the hunger for heavenly things, we won’t be able to make it to heaven (Luke 13:25). God has revealed himself through his word (Bible) to feed us daily.
