Silence in Heaven

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

There is a time for everything, …a time to be silent and a time to speak. (NIV) Ecclesiastes 3:1a,7b

The eighth chapter of the book of Revelation can help us draw some lessons for life in the very first verse: the issue of silence (Revelation 8:1). If there could be silence in heaven, then the earth must learn same. But it is interesting what we see in our world today- noise is found from both within and without. We are often guilty for not making silence a priority. Spiritually driven silence can be so rewarding, i.e. reflective quietude that draws us closer to our maker ultimately.

Among the things revealed through silence include the following-

First, silence can give a better report and reputation than talkativeness. We may be much esteemed many a time by mere silence. Solomon of old reminds us that even a fool is seen as wise in silence (Proverbs 17:28). Silence is indeed a great teacher.

Again, silence enhances hearing and listening and produces blessings from the Lord. There is the danger of assuming that by mere hearing, we imbibe everything. We can be poor listeners most of the time because of the eviction of silence. But blessed is he who uses words with restraint (Proverbs 17:27) and hears the word of God (Revelation 1:3a).

Next, Job mentions that, hearing produces understanding and silence reveals wisdom (Job 13:1, 5). No wonder we are instructed to be slow to speak but quick to listen (James 1:19).

Lastly, the mention of silence in heaven, more correctly surmises the silence of God. Jesus remained silent in several occasions too on earth (Matthew 26:63, 27:12, 14; Mark 15:5, John 8:6). And how secured shall we become if we make use of the gift of silence! And if we could spend at least half an hour every day, it will surely be worth it.

May we richly make time for silence with the Lord first, then into all other relationships we have been blessed with. Our prayer today is: “Dear Lord, please help us to be silent while you constantly speak to us every day”. Amen.
