A life well lived

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“His master replied, ‘well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.’’ (NIV) Matthew 25:21

Bible reading: Matthew 7:20-27

A story was told of the tribute an evangelist wrote for his father. As he read the tribute at the funeral, everyone was amazed about what he was reading. It is normal to write good things about the dead but this evangelist just spoke the truth about who his father was. He read about all the vices his father indulged in while alive: his father was a drunkard, a womanizer, an unforgiving man and mostly the talk of the town for some time. In short, his father’s life was never an example for anyone until he got to know about Jesus and the message of the cross. Thanks, be to God that his father repented, confessed his sins, baptized and surrendered his life to Christ years before he died. His dad became a new creature and did his best to please God before he was called to heavenly glory.

Many times, at funerals, the dead are said to have lived well when they were alive. The world’s definition of a life well lived are many and physical. If one dies after attaining a higher education, got a well-paid job, was rich, got married, had many children who are also well to do and above all, lived above the seventy years’ mark, then that person is regarded to have lived well. It is good to have all these things whilst one is alive and to leave a legacy behind when you die but those are not the most important. What is most important is whether, in the sight of God, He can also say to us, “a life well lived”?

As we go about our day to day activities, and we thrive to obtain things that will make our lives comfortable here on earth, let us be mindful that death awaits. Will we prefer that at our funeral, man will say, “a life well lived” or rather prefer God to say to us, “a life well lived”? Make a choice today but I entreat you to choose the latter. If you are still contemplating on accepting Christ as your Savior, please make the decision now because we do not know the day or time we would be called out of this world nor do we know when He will come and judge the world.
