Abide in Me (Christ)

Written by Philip Addo Bempong.

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” (NIV) James 1:19

Intimacy is impossible at a distance. Such an intimate interchange of love as this, requires that we stay close to God. Part of loving God is maintaining our "connection" to him. He is the source for everything we have and ever hopes for. The answer to all of our questions, be it relationship, marriage and parenting, etc lie within God. In Him resides peace for our confusion. God holds the key to every mystery and to all that is unknown. Wisdom, knowledge, and life itself are found in him.

This is the point Jesus was making when He compared the relationship between His followers and Himself with the branches on a vine.

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser …Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” (John 15:1, 4-7, 9-10).

Branches of a vine have no life in themselves; their life is in the vine. Any branch that is separated from the vine will die because it cannot sustain itself. Although it is the branches that bear the leaves and fruits, they can do so only as long as they remain connected to the vine. The life that is in the vine follows through the branches and causes them to bear fruit. No branch can produce or bear fruit by itself.

Some way, Jesus said that we can't do anything apart from Him. We are the branches, but He is the vine, our source of life and fruit. Everything we need, everything we can ever have or be, such as sustainable relationship, successful and good marriage, or parenting is in Him only.

In other to be fruitful and fulfill our relationship and marriage purpose, we must stay in a vital and constant connection to Jesus, our Vine. Jesus said, in so doing we will be filled with His joy and His will continue to remain in us, John 15:11.

All love needed to sustain relationship and marriage has its source in God. We can love to sustain and maintain any other relationship on earth only if we abide in Him.

God bless you.
