A Loan to God

““If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord - and he will repay you!” (NLT) Proverbs 19:17

As we focus on Money, Work and God for this month, I would like us to reflect on one important aspect we can use our money for – loan to God. According to the Oxford dictionary, the word “loan” as a noun which means “an act of lending something to someone.” Its equivalent verb means “to lend”, be it a sum of money or item of property.

Proverbs says that helping the poor is a loan to God. Here, the poor refers to “one who is considered to be deserving of pity or sympathy/lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable or normal in a society”. I personally feel very good about lending to God because somehow the Almighty who created the whole universe can actually be in debt to me. I know it’s very selfish but who wouldn’t want a pay from God?

In this day and age where credit crunch is inevitable and financial fraud mars the actions of men, what noble way can I guarantee the fruits of my hard work? Matthew 6:21 admonishes that for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Where should I put my treasure? In the hands of men or in the hands of God?

I pray we get out of our comfort zone and use our money in the best way we can to bless those who genuinely need help, in Jesus name. Amen!
