Everyone needs an angel

Written by Mantebeah Elizabeth Matilda Abena.

“tell me what I can do to help you,” Jonathan exclaimed. (NLT) 1 Samuel 20:4

Bible reading: 1 Samuel 20, 2 Samuel 1:17-27, 2 Samuel 9, Colossians 3:13

The story of Jonathan and David and their bond is a constant reminder of how we are to care for each other. The early apostles did so for one another. Their kindness to each other was evident in both physical and spiritual matters. In Acts, we read of how some sold their possessions to help others (Acts 2:45-46; 4:32-37), how they prayed for each other in the advancement of God’s work (Acts 4:23-31) and their unflinching love and support for each other. Today we struggle to do the same as Christians. We could ask ourselves the many reasons why we are unable to do so, but nothing seems like a good and justified answer.

I watched a movie where a boy went to church every single day to pray to God so he could read well at school. In the process, he had to leave his dog outside the auditorium to a beggar who sits right beside the church gate. Because of this kindness from the man, the boy would from time to time leave his lunch to feed the beggar. He would say to the beggar “everyone needs an angel; I guess I am yours”. The beggar always thanked him for such kindness and blessed him. Little did he know that the beggar was an angel and he was the only one who sees the beggar.  One day the boy had an accident that was meant to kill him but He didn’t die. He was saved by the angel. The flash of light from the angel also improved his eyesight which was his prayer request.

What does this story tell us? Everyone indeed needs an angel. You can be an angel in someone's life. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. It doesn’t matter how much you can give in kind or cash to someone. The little advice you can give a brother or sister or the little smile from you could relieve someone of a burden. A little kindness could go a long way to save a soul. A time spent visiting brethren, a prayer said on behalf of another, couples supporting each other; these and more are all angelic things we could do for other people. Galatians 6:2 admonishes us to “carry one another’s burdens, and in this way… fulfil the law of Christ”. God bless you as you reach out to help another.
