Am I my brother’s keeper?

Genesis 4:9

The first murder in the holy book is the account of Cain killing his brother Abel because God favoured Abel’s sacrifice over his. Now here is the conversation of attention in Genesis 4:9 “Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

We cannot always understand God fully, but His question in the above text suggested that it was truly Cain’s duty to look out for his brother. However, Cain’s answer suggested otherwise… “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Similarly, as Christians, God expects us to look out for our brothers and sisters, but we often ignore this duty or do otherwise. To assess ourselves, pause here and ask yourself the question: Am I my brother’s keeper? In fact, are we looking out for each other? Really? Do we believe we are looking out for each other with our attitude of keeping grudges, ingratitude, slandering, petty jealousies, unconstructive criticisms, betrayals in all forms, backbiting, rumour mongering, this list can go on and on and on…?

The world right now needs a lot of love, a lot of being there for each other, a lot of looking out for our brothers and sisters so let us go back to our Bibles and find out what it truly means to be each other’s keeper.

May “the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26) as you keep trying in your walk with Elohim.
