One thing you lack

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

"Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."(NIV) Mark 10:21

We all have one thing that may hold us back from inheriting eternal life. You might have kept the commandment since childhood: “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.” (NIV) Mark 10:19. However, there is one more thing that may rob you of your eternal life.

Normally, this ‘one thing’ is difficult to let go, and it has become so part of us that we may not even realize its subtle bad influence on us. When we have an encounter with the truth and this ‘one thing’ is exposed to us, we become crestfallen and sad, because we can’t accept the fact that ‘one thing’ can cause us eternal glory. For most of us, we would rather walk away from our salvation than to embrace the painful truth and initiate the process of repentance (Read Mark 10:21-22).

Beloved, it is my prayer that as we continue to grow in our spiritual life, we will come to the point where we can deal squarely with this ‘one thing’ in our lives, through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. It is my prayer that we will not walk away from the truth but rather embrace our salvation and expunge this ‘one thing’ that can rob us of eternal glory.
