Asking according to His will

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we ask of Him.” (NIV) 1 John 5:14-15

Reading this passage over and over again, I keep asking myself, “what does the passage seek to put across?” Whenever I prayed, I signed off saying, “may your will be done” but then I realized some of my prayers were never answered. Going back to the passage, I realized it might not be just signing off prayers saying “may your will be done” but there could be more to that passage.

How many of us have wondered why some of our prayers have never got answered? Doing a little retrospective made me realize that anytime I asked of God anything that draws me closer to Him, I got it. God is our heavenly father and He loves to have us closer to Him. Before you ask Him, you ought to ask, “does what am about to ask draw me closer to Him or does it take me away from Him?” Drawing closer to God does not mean going to church frequently as we often think; it means having a personal relationship with Him through prayers and devotion.

Again, is what you are asking in line with His word? We are Christians and must always ask according to God’s word, right? Many of our requests are for ourselves and families. We are even selfish when we ask; how do we then receive? Try asking more and more for others and see if you will not be blessed with your requests as well?

May the Lord meet you in your time of need as you ask according to His will. AMEN!
