Standing out from the crowd

Written by Anyim Daniel.

“You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice.” (NLT) Exodus 23:2

Being a part of a group in undertaking an activity, is such a nice experience to have, especially when that activity proves successful. Often, we prefer to move along with or follow our societies in everything they do in order not to be considered anti-social. But it is also prudent to hold on to our principles as Christians even if that will eventually make us anti-social.

The apostle Peter had to write to the churches in Asia Minor to encourage them because they were considered anti-social and thus suffered persecution simply because they did not follow the society in doing wrong (2 Timothy 1:1–2:13; 3:10–17, 2 Thes. 1:3-12).

In our workplaces, homes and schools, it is not out of the norm to tell lies to serve as cover ups or cheat in exams. Any individual who decides to stand out of the crowd in such situations is often belittled for taking such a decision. But as Christians, we are entreated to stand out of the crowd and allow our lights to shine (Matt. 5:15).

Our lifestyles and attitudes speaks volumes to others who follow the crowd "blindly". So, decisions taken not to follow the crowd in doing wrong, ends up changing another person's view of his actions. I would entreat us to stand out in order to pull others from the wayward crowd.
