Building on a solid foundation

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

"Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash." (NLT) Matthew 7:24-27

Ask any geotechnical engineer and he will tell you that for any architectural structure, probably the most critical part is the foundation. Shallow or deep, the foundation transfers load from the structure to the ground and holds it in place. I have personally witnessed the foundational works of a lot of buildings. Huge excavators dig out earth to a depth commensurable with the load of the structure.

We are the architects of our lives but the One who gave us this life has given us the blueprint with which to build the structures. From the foundation to the lintel, every detail has been carefully spelt out in his word. In our personal lives, marriages, work, schooling, you name it, we will find all the essential details in the Holy Bible.

No matter the super structure you put up, if your foundation is not solid, everything will come crumbling down. You need to build your life on the rock and that rock is Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 10:4). He is the stone the builders rejected but he has been made the Chief Cornerstone (Psalm 118:22; Acts 4:11). On Christ the solid foundation we build our lives; all other ground is sinking sand.
