Bread of Life
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never go hungry” (NIV) John 6:35
Bread appears to be a staple food in most parts of the world. For example, the Palestinian world in which Christ lived. But no matter how much we eat bread (food) in a day, we get hungry again. This makes quenching hunger a continuous business in this physical world.
Another inevitable aspect of our world is death. Irrespective of how careful you are, the environment you are born into, your family class, education, social status, positions and possessions, life will surely come to an end for you one day. Having the best food programs will not solve the imminent problem of death; “for it is appointed for humans to die once” (Heb. 9:27).
God's admonition for us today is that we do not lose heart or panic over death because there is a way out. There is a particular food we all need to eat to enjoy life forever. That food is always available, accessible and it is at no cost to everybody who wants it. Jesus Christ (The Word) is the bread of life that came from heaven and gives life to the world (John 6:33).
As you leave your house to look for food for the body, think of your soul. God is the provider of our daily bread for physical health (Matt. 6:11). Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you (John 6:27).
