What if?

"But Samuel said to him, "I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you as king over Israel!” (NIV) 1 Sam 15:26

We are created by God for a divine purpose, but we also have the freedom to make our own choices. The choices we make will either conform to the Will of God or otherwise. Deciding to follow the Will of God will keep us in line with our divine purpose but if our decisions fall outside the Will of God, the opposite usually happens.

Let’s consider some choices made by some Bible characters and ask ourselves the “What if?” question. In Genesis 37, we get the clear picture that Joseph, the son of Jacob, was chosen by God to be a great person or a ruler. He faced betrayal by his own brothers and sold into slavery. The major turning point in his life as a slave is perhaps his encounter with Potiphar’s wife. What if Joseph “utilized” the great opportunity offered by Potiphar’s wife to fornicate with her (Gen. 39:7)? Do you think Joseph would still have achieved the purpose God had for him? Abraham was also promised to be the father of a great nation, but he had no child (Gen. 17). One day, he saw two men passing by and he urged them to come to his tent for some food and rest (Gen. 18). The kind gesture of Abraham was returned with the promise and blessing of a son. What if Abraham had neglected caring for the passing visitors when he had the opportunity? What would have been the result of getting a son with his wife?

Today, God has blessed us with a new life filled with many “opportunities” and the freedom to choose. I want to encourage you to make decisions and act in accordance with the Will of God, which is written in His Word (Holy Bible). Let us make conscious effort to resist the desires of the flesh which are the traps of Satan and stumbling block to our blessings (Gal. 5:19-21, Eph. 2:3). When in doubt ask yourself the “What if?” question. May God help us as we try our best to make the right decisions and take the right actions in accordance with His Will.
