God-led: The gate of the year

Written by Douglas Agyapong.

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (NIV) Romans 8:14

At the beginning of a year like this, it is only appropriate I share with you a piece of this popular poem written by Minnie Louise Haskins entitled: "THE GATE OF THE YEAR". King George VI of England quoted this poem in his public Christmas broadcast. It reads:

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:

“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied:

“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.

And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East…

A toddler who has recently learned to walk and is on a promenade with the father has neither sense of direction nor destination. He just follows the lead of daddy and trusts that it is safe wherever daddy leads. He knows he is safe as long as his hand beds in the hand of his father. This is the message the poem reveals.

Likewise, for us, the year 2018 will be great if we decide to let God leads us. Then He will lead us through a successful year despite the surrounding struggles. Our motto should be: to make absolutely no step unless God has stepped; to go nowhere unless God is there; to say nothing unless God has prompted; to eat nothing unless God has given; simply God-led. Amen
