Wisdom from Above

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” (NIV) James 3:13

The modern world is fascinating because of the abundance of resources that has made life easier and enjoyable. Everyone wants to learn more complex subjects to come out with unique discoveries in the world and to be a specialist in some aspect of life. There is a distinction between information, knowledge and wisdom. We live in an era of information and knowledge overload but not that of wisdom.

Wisdom is the application of knowledge into the development of character and making of wise choices. Two different kinds of wisdom can be seen in the world and in scripture. One is earthly and the other is from above (spiritual). One comes from God, the other from Satan. The classical view of wisdom is sought through philosophy and man's rational thought to determine the mysteries of existence and the universe. The wisdom from above does not look to man’s philosophy or thoughts to determine the mysteries of existence but rather it looks to God.

Any form of wisdom that does not glorify God but rather cheats fellow humans does not come from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual and of the devil. The builders of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11) wanted to make a physical legacy; instead of lifting up the name of Jehovah. They reasoned carnally. Lot used the worldly wisdom in choosing the fertile portion of the land leaving the other for his uncle Abraham (Genesis 13). What was the end? Disaster. By worldly wisdom of acquiring more wealth, Lot failed to look at the consequence of his selection. He lost all things except his two daughters.

This is how we can identify the difference between the two types of wisdom. Worldly wisdom is always self-centered and selfish instead of God-centered. Worldly wisdom says don’t worry about who you hurt or how you get there and self-fulfillment is your ultimate goal. Wisdom from above is rooted and desire for Christ, seeks the good of others and also glorify in all situations. This brings security and significance from Christ. Godly wisdom can be obtained by listening to the Holy Spirit, meditating on God’s Word, asking for it in prayers. “If you lack knowledge, go to school. If you lack wisdom, get on your knees!” Demonstrate Godly wisdom with your spiritual life pursuits. Amen
