Expectations and disappointments belong to God

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another” (KJV) Psalm 75:6-7

As the New Year zips by, one word that seems to be ringing in the heart of all is expectations. Yes, expectations that ultimately produce success and fulfillment. But does it always appear that simple? Do our short and long term expectations always occur as anticipated? Well, it is not unnatural to have expectations assuming multi-faceted trends in our daily fast-pacing lives.

It is fascinating though to find disappointments equally existing where expectations abound. Come to think of it- what then causes disappointment in our lives if not failure to achieve our expectations? Our wishes fall fast and hard against stone-cold reality, our desires melt into an empty unfulfilled dream. The list could be endless where expectations may yield disappointments: expectations in our jobs, marriages, education, friends, family, church, travel, leaders, businesses, etc. Unfortunately, when our will appears to succumb to God’s good will for our lives we feel God has disappointed us. Yet in the mist of our weakness, danger, distress, sickness, unemployment, hunger, pain or even death God stands with us-we are never alone!

Life is so uncertain and we do not even know what will happen tomorrow (James 4:14). Therefore to put our confidence in human expectations alone may certainly lead to tears, sorrows and subsequent disappointment. The Grand weaver of our lives knows the best for each one of us and we may do well to totally surrender, not only our expectations to Him but much more, our disappointments too.
