“He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds” (NLT) Titus 2:14.

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up” (NLT) Galatians 6:9.

Anytime at church, when my dad is called to lead our thoughts in prayer concerning the need for brethren to be committed to God’s work, I am pretty sure to hear these words: “Father, help us to know that you didn’t call us into your kingdom to be mere spectators; to look on whilst others work. Let us all be actively involved in your work, Lord, for the harvest is great but the labourers are few.”

Christians did nothing to merit mercy and grace (Acts 15:11). Prior to our regeneration, we were not entitled to any special privileges by default. It is just by God’s grace that through our obedience to the gospel we have been purified and made special people (Titus 2:14). We therefore have to demonstrate our gratitude through our commitment to good works.

In sundry times in scriptures, God through the inspired writer Paul admonished us to be committed to good works. Paul himself was exemplary when he told the Corinthian church that:

“But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favour on me – and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace” (NLT) 1 Corinthians 15:10.

Indeed, Paul’s commitment to the Lord’s work was legendary. A former ‘terrorist’ and a late comer to Christ, the only thing he could do to show his privileged call was through good works. What about you?
